Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden has broken ground with its new nearly 70,000 gallon hippo exhibit. The $7.3 million hippo exhibit is the final piece of the zoo's $34 million Africa expansion project. The exhibit which is expected to open to the public in the summer of 2016 will offer it's visitors a unique underwater viewing experience. Some of the challenges Satchell Engineering faced was creating a multistage filtration system which includes course straining & filtration. Hippos spend about 95% of their time in the water. Satchell Engineering & Associate's design will cut water usage by about 40%. To further cut operational costs, 100% of the water put into the exhibit will come from rain water.
