The Dallas Zoo’s exhibit Wilds of Africa is an expansive project holds a variety of different animals native to the African landscape. Satchell Engineering & Associates had a special role in designing the aquatic features for the Hippo habitat within this exhibit.
The Hippo habitat is a 120,000-gallon freshwater pool that houses the hippo bloat in residence at the zoo. This system also includes a 10,000-gallon holding pool and two 5,000-gallon pools for the hippos back of house for examination of the animals. Satchell Engineering & Associates designed the aquatic Life Support System for this pool, utilizing a coarse and fine filtration system that includes vertical sand filter tanks and pumps, screen channel filtration, deaeration towers, ozone generators, off-gas destruct, and chlorinators.
