Philadelphia Zoo’s Water is Life exhibit is home to their Giant River Otters. This exhibit has a 5,000-gallon freshwater pool that has both above ground and underwater viewing for guests to enjoy and a waterfall feature for the otter’s enrichment. Satchell Engineering & Associates assisted the zoo with the redesign of aquatic Life Support Systems for the already existing habitat.
When we started on the project, the exhibit already had the pool, waterfall feature, and vertical sand filter. The zoo staff wanted to increase the filtration processes that occur to increase the clarity of the water. Our redesign involved adding an ozone disinfection system, off-gas destruct, UV sterilization, and chlorinators to reach the desired effect that was requested from the staff.
