Charles County, Maryland

The Maryland state Department of Natural Resources runs the Cedarville Mussel Hatchery in Charles county. This expansive property focuses of the raising of young mussels and oysters for consumption around the country as well as oyster habitat restoration projects for the Maryland coast lines. This facility has numerous indoor aquaculture habitats to ensure the healthy development of the shellfish.

Satchell Engineering & Associates designed the aquatic Life Support Systems for the mussel hatchery. While still in construction phases, the hatchery will feature new LSS design for both the effluent water system and the water intake system. The systems utilize a fine filtration model that consists of vertical AFM filters and pumps, cartridge filters, hydropneumatic tanks, and UV sterilization.
