Cincinnati Zoo’s exhibit, Africa, is the largest wildlife exhibit at the zoo. This expansive project holds a variation of different animals native to the African landscape, with Satchell Engineering & Associates having a special role in designing the aquatic features for the Hippo Cove.
Hippo Cove is a 67,000-gallon freshwater pool the hippo bloat in residence at the zoo. This system also includes an 11,000-gallon holding pool for the hippos in the back of house for examination of the animals. Satchell Engineering & Associates designed the aquatic Life Support System for this pool, utilizing a fine filtration system that includes sand filter tanks and pumps, GAC filters, screen channel filtration, ozone generators, and chlorinators. The system also contains a rain water storage tank to increase the zoo’s resource sustainability. See Photo Gallery
