Cincinnati Zoo’s North America exhibit is home to two main species, the American Black Bear and the Southern Sea Otters. This exhibit in the zoo was designed to highlight the varied of species that North America home and simulate their natural climate for the comfort of the animals. Part of those comforts includes pools for those animals that was designed by Satchell Engineering & Associates.
The Southern Sea Otter pool is a 36,000-gallons saltwater pool that includes the main otter pool for guest viewing and two holding pools back of house for animal care. Satchell Engineering designed the aquatic Life Support System for the sea otter pool. We used a fine filtration system that included horizontal sand filters and pumps, vertical sand filters and pumps, protein skimmers, heat exchangers, hydropneumatic tanks, ozone disinfection, and saltwater recovery systems.
The American Black Bear exhibit has a freshwater pool built to hold the 2 playful cubs in current residence at the zoo. Satchell Engineering & Associates designed the aquatic Life Support System for the black bear pool. We used a fine filtration system that consists of vertical sand filters and pumps, chlorinators, and UV sterilization. See Photo Gallery
