Denver Zoo’s Sea Lion habitat is home to their California Sea Lions. The exhibit has a total of six pools, an upper and lower level pool meant for guests enjoyment and four holding pools that make access to the sea loins for treatment convenient for staff. The main viewing pools also have above ground and underwater viewing, allowing guests to see the animal’s natural behaviors up close.

Satchell Engineering & Associates designed the aquatic Life Support System for the Sea Lion habitat. The 150,000-gallon saltwater upper main pool, the two 7,500-gallon holding pools, and the two 5,200-gallon holding pools are all filtered on one Life Support system. The pools use a fine filtration system consisting of perlite filters, vertical sand filters, protein skimmers, saltwater mixing, ozone disinfection, off-gas destruct, chlorinators, and heat exchangers. The 25,000-gallon lower pool is filtered by its own Life Support System that consists of perlite filters, ozone disinfection, off-gas destruct, chlorinators, and heat exchangers. See Photo Gallery.
