Denver Zoo has recently unveiled its reimagined Schlessman Family Foundation Sea Lion Habitat, providing a modernized home for its California sea lions. At the heart of this transformation is a state-of-the-art aquatic life support system (LSS) by Satchell Engineering & Associates, designed to improve animal care, conserve resources, and enhance guest experience.
The upgraded system delivers significant improvements in water quality, filtration, and energy efficiency. By reducing water turnover requirements, the new LSS is projected to save more than 8 million gallons of water each year, reflecting the Zoo’s commitment to sustainability. In addition, advanced controls ensure that pool salinity and temperature remain within optimal ranges to support the health and well-being of the sea lions.
Behind the scenes, the LSS works in tandem with expanded habitats and care areas, giving keepers greater flexibility for enrichment, medical care, and animal management. Visitors can now enjoy clear underwater views through a 16-foot acrylic window, made possible by the enhanced water clarity that the new system provides.
