Southern Illinois University is a leader in the fields of aquaculture and aquatic sciences. To support their innovation in the world of aquatic research, they host the Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic sciences, with numerous research facilities such as the Aquatic Research Laboratory. This facility is a comprehensive project with a total of nine individual aquaculture systems and three individual alternate aquaculture systems. The project was designed to encompassed a wide range of aquaculture systems, including marine aquaria racks, a zebrafish system, a hatching system, a freshwater storage and distribution system, and a brine shrimp system.

Satchell Engineering & Associates designed the aquatic Life Support Systems for the Aquatic Research Laboratory at Southern Illinois University. The design contains three different life support systems all created for the specific needs of the twelve tanks within this laboratory. The system utilizes fine filtration techniques that consists of vertical sand filters and pumps, biofilters and pumps, bag filters, fractionator skids, saltwater mixing tanks, UV sterilization, and heat exchangers. See Pictures
