Saint Louis, MO

Saint Louis Zoo houses a spectacular exhibit called Sea Lion Sound. This 240,000-gallon saltwater exhibit holds California Sea Lions and Harbor Seals that participate in the Sea Lion Show that is put on by the zoo. This exhibit also has a 35-foot-long underwater viewing tunnel for guests to walk through and view the sea lions and seals in their natural habitats.

Satchell Engineering & Associates designed the aquatic Life Support System for this exhibit. The system filters four main pools throughout the habitat, the Main exhibit, the Show pool, the Community Holding pool, and the back of house holding pool. The system uses a fine filtration model that consists of vertical sand filters and pumps, bead filters and pumps, saltwater recovery systems, deaeration towers, ozone disinfection, off-gas destruct, chlorinators, and heat exchangers.
