The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium, in 2027, is planning to open their new exhibit the Ungulate Barn which will be the primary housing and rehabilitation for their Giraffes. This exhibit is going through a phased construction with plans to build a 8,500-gallons freshwater back of housing holding pool for their Pygmy Hippos. This pool will be in addition to their viewing habitat in the Jungle Odyssey, acting primarily as a rehabilitation and treatment facility for the hippos in house.

Satchell Engineering & Associates designed the aquatic Life Support System for this new pool. The system utilizes both coarse and fine filtration to ensure high water clarity for the animals. The coarse filtration system consists of static screen filters while the fine filtration system consists of sand filters and pumps, ozone disinfection, off-gas destruct, chlorinators, and heat exchangers.
