The Indianapolis Zoo contracted Satchell Engineering & Associates to create a Concept Design for a new American Alligator and Orinoco Crocodile exhibit for the zoo. This design would feature three new pools, one indoor and two outdoor, all with above ground viewing. The first outdoor pool would be 22,500-gallons of freshwater, the second being 11,500-gallons of freshwater, and the indoor pool being 7,500-gallons of freshwater, each of them running on their own aquatic Life Support System.
The aquatic life support systems were designed to use a fine filtration system that consisted of vertical sand filters and pumps, UV sterilization, chlorinators, and heat exchangers. For alternative methods of disinfection for the pools, we proposed adding an ozone disinfection system to the pools, if room back of house permitted.
